By pass fuel primer pump

#16 Post by Michael Eker »

For the aviation type by pass fuel primer system I would use metal T pieces, and good

quality hose clips on all fuel lines.

This UK website sell T pieces in 1/4" and 5/16":

There must be similar companies in North America.

If I can get a minute I will fit a by pass system to my 356C and post a photo.

If I use high quality components it should last a long time.

I like the car to start on the button as it impresses the neighbours

Fuel priming engine after storage

#17 Post by Ron LaDow »

Brian,

"The safety articles you linked to refer to "priming" by pouring gas
down the carb throats. What we are discussing here of course is not
really "priming" in the colloquial sense, it is prefilling the
float bowls via the *same* fuel path that the carb gets its fuel
from normally, namely via the fuel pump into the carb inlet valve.
Brian R Adams"

I missed most of the thread (WCH; thanks to the organizers), but
the Pre Mat unit primes it from the center of the cross-tube in the
fuel line; see attached.
These are in production, for delivery later this summer.
Thanks,

The pre mat unit itself looks good but I don't like where it is.

Any fuel leaking from the bulb or hoses would be sucked into the engine fan.

It needs to be near, (after), the pump.

Very slick, Ron -- and typical of PreMat products. I like the stealth location.

Does its location tend to prime the right carb only, and are there any priming issues with it being located at the highest (and driest) point in the fuel line?

No reason you couldn't put it at the pump, but you'll have to argue with the factory about that hose back there. And the hose with the kit is better than the old, fabric-wrapped material.
The company making the bulb itself has provided test data which assures me it will last forever soaked in petroleum and/or ethanol. I'm a bit more conservative and suggest a 5-year replacment cycle, mostly so customers will replace the hose. It's also tear- and cut-resistant.
Suffice to say, it's been through more than a couple of test processes. And every single unit is pressure-tested prior to shipment.
