Dear Friends,
I am trying to replace the trans nose seal, the one near the shift coupler, with the trans in the car. In a very old Registry article, a guy explained he carefully dug this seal out with a center punch and small chisels. I am well into trying to do the same. I have destroyed a lot of the metal face of the seal, but don't think I have affected the outer rim at all. I am terrified of gouging the shifter shaft or seal housing, and don't see how I can get it loose the way I am going. I am using awls, sharp hooks, punches, screwdrivers, chisels, and pliers.
Any advice to offer? Should I keep going on my own? Is there a better tool?
Also, thanks to all who replied about my steering box leak. I degreased and sealed the adjuster with teflon paste, and am hopeful!

This *will* work, but you still need to be careful. Select the smallest drill which will allow a decent punch to pass. Make up a drill stop (like a piece of tubing). Chuck the drill with the stop in your hand drill and drill into the housing from the side just barely behind the 'face' of the seal/housing. The stop will keep you from drilling into the seal itself, but you can now use a punch to collapse the seal and should be able to get it out from there.
Thanks,

One thing to look out for is to not mark the shift at all,
this is where most leaks will come from even with a new
seal. Keep it smooth.
