I have some parts that have been stripped and plated.
Basically they have the same finish as found on a generator pully.
It is a goldish yellowish color.
anybody know what this type of plating is called ?
I always thought that it was anodized but my friend says no...
any help ? thanks Rich SF CA

I have a comment on "EPA Restrictions"....most platers decided to close because they refused to dispose of their wastes correctly. They could have chosen to stay where they were and raise prices but they didn't. The Press then wanked on the regulators w/o giving the whole story.Kenik Hassel wrote:Would be zinc or cadmium plating. Zinc can still be had, but cadmium platers are nearly impossible to find due to EPA restrictions.
Just my $.02.
An environmental regulator for 20+ years and proud of it.

Metal Plating Question ?
Rich,
"I have some parts that have been stripped and plated.

Generally, it's called "chromate". It's a surface treatment in addition to the plating (Zn or Cd) which is superior to the bare plating and was developed too late to be used on 356s (yes, I know, except for that one part on late Cs...)
Thanks,
Ron LaDow

And, of course, regulators have a *far* better idea of what customers will pay for plating than some silly guy who's only spent 20 years doing and selling it.
Thanks,

Ron and a few others have decided to send me PMs or post responses to my comment.
Platers for many years dumped the waste in pits on their sites. A lot of old time platers are now dead. The US EPA, State DTSC and local jerkoffs that couldn't get a job oterwise like myself made them clean up these old waste pits.
Sorry if I'm the herald of bad news. Chrome, cadmium, zinc, lead and other heavy metals aren't supposed to be dumped in the soil. They migrate to the water table and kill people.
The fall of the Roman Empire is attributed to the use of lead pipes for the water for the famous Roman Baths. When you pay extra dollars for chrome and you have to ship your bumpers to East Jesus, Utah or whatever, think of your family that could be next to that plater.
There's a reason chrome went out of favor...it's not because it rusts....it's the lawsuits. The US Government shut it down.
Ask me about asbestos.....

Metal Plating Question ?
That is zinc chromate, a good weather resistance finish. The
original would be silver looking one probably cadmium or
clear zinc.
