Voltage Regulator

#2 Post by Mike Smith »

The Unit shown is a VW Unit designed to be mounted on top of the dynamo not on the Firewall

If the buyer is happy to adapt the mounting and its control Range is adequate it will probably work

John,
The smaller regulators are now made in Mexico and Brazil by Bosch.
They are not current limit adjustable, never were.
They use semi conductors (Variode) and if the semi cond fails all current
limits
fail.
Ask if the current limit is marked on the regulator.
It should be 23 amps for the 200 watt generator used in our 356 cars..
More current than that and you risk the generator.

Can you use one, sure just be sure to keep the battery on a tender, and
don't add extra electric loads to the car.

As always have the regulator calibrated before using.
Joe

As Mike has pointed out, the voltage regulator shown is for an early VW to be mounted on top of the generator. By bending the mounting tabs, one could somehow mount it on the firewall. BUT the mounting distance will be wrong and the the unit must be turned 90 degrees. However, they are 6 volts and rated 45 amps (versus the Porsche 50 amps).

Mounting distance for the small (VA) reg. is 90 mm and for the large (UA) version it's 130 mm. Some 356C cars had the UA but most had the VA type.

To solve the non-availability of voltage regulators, we've started a solid state conversion program for both reg. types mentioned above, 6 volt and 12 volt. Outwardly, they look like new units with zinc plating and black covers, correct screws, decals. etc. Hook up is the same, no confusion there. Concour judges will never know. We accept like for like cores (UA for UA, VA for VA either voltage). Pricing is from $269. exchange. We have in stock now.

John,
That one could be made to work but it has some issues.
First this is a regulator made to fit a VW generator, notice
how the bracket is angled, this is to fit on the body of a
VW generator. You can still get a good regulator that fits a
356.
