Master Cylinder Failure

#1 Post by Guest »

While under the care the other day, I noticed a wet floor pan bottom. That is, the undercoating at the front of the floor pad looked wet. It was....and with brake fluid. So, the dual circuit master I installed 4 or 5 years ago has failed. I have ordered a new one (German made) and will be installing soon. I was thinking of going to silicone fluid, as I have in my NSX. Any thoughts on this?

Jim,
The big problem with silicone fluid is quality. Most
regular manufacturers have pulled out so the stuff out there
is unknown. Ate is coming out with a regular spec fluid that
is the same basic compounds as regular fluid. A good
standard fluid if changed every 2-3 years will last a long time.

I used silicone fluid for many years in motorcycles, a Daimler SP250, and my 67 911S. It is great for cars that don't move but sucks for cars that are driven! Brake feel is poor, squishy, and not what Porsche would be happy to sell a customer. If you have the wheels off of your car at least every couple of years, you will only need an extra 15 minutes to replace the fluid and you will get the best feel and performance.
