1958 Speedster

#1 Post by Dan Carter »

Hello - I own a 1958 Speedster. I found a pool of oil under and around the right rear tire. it appears an axle tube seal is leaking. Is this a do-able at home repair? Anyone have a step by step for me? Thanks D. :?:

Dan,
It certainly has been done in a home shop, but what manuals do you have for your car?
Thanks,

I have an Autobooks #827. Covers 356A - 1965. Has a bit of info but doesn't have great pics.

I know the axle nut can be tough to get off. I have no neumatic tools. I used to use a long pipe. Also I don't own any pullers. My book shows a a machine "pressing out race of outer bearing from disc brake hub" - My book covers drum brake removal but not disc and I have disc..

I just don't want to proceed without more knowledge and a plan. Any input you could offer is greatly appreciated.

Dan,

You first need to clean it up and then see if you can pinpoint the exact spot it's leaking.
If it is the tube i would advise taking it to a qualified VW repair shop as you will need a special press fixture to remove and install the casting from the tube.
It could be the inner bearing too and that isn't an easy job without a special puller plus you run the risk of knocking the fulcrum plates off the axle and then it's a long paddle up a well know creek reinstalling them.
In a nut shell "it ain't a good place to start learning"
