1600 engine picture

#1 Post by Peter Bojanac »

I was wondering if anyone can provide me with a image of a 1600 with Zeniths that is as close to the factory standard as possible.

I have left the decals to last and the gold metalwork is wrong (i think)

Below are 3 images of my engine.

It is a 603490 on a 112725 1960 356b

Thanks in advance

Peter,

Spot on, nice engine. Now, the gold is wrong on the fuel lines and throttle linkages.
The generator pulley was originally silver anodized or zinc plated as were the other parts.
The thermostat is correct as it's copper/brass.
The dipstick and valve cover bales were zinc and so were the coil and oil filter brackets, not polished.
If you are going to show it for points I'd get an opinion from Dr. Show (Tom Scott) otherwise it looks fine for general purposes.

pbojanac,
The "gold" looks like cad-iridite which is better than clear cad, but wasn't used on 356s (except for one or two locations and I'll bet Jim busts my chops on this). But not on the engine; that all should be clear cad.
You're also missing the accelerator links on both carbs.
There is an image of engines at the factory in the archives, but I'm not sure how to search for it.

Thanks,
Ron LaDow

Norm,
I'm gonna guess that Brad is probably the only guy who actually analyzed the plating, but it sure looks like cad to me.
Brad, anyone?

Thanks,
Ron LaDow

A friend of mine has a poster that is similar, but different. When you look closely, especially at the poster, there are minor differences between each one. Of course, some are supers, some are normals, etc. But beyond that too.

Factory photo of 'ready engines'

#11 Post by Dick Weiss »

The engines are for the '62 BT6 (and/or later) series and all have Euro heat systems.

Keep in mind, the 1600 super had a silver fan shroud back in the early days. Only normals had a black shroud and the monkey linkage for the solexes in front of the shroud. supers behind the shround. I THINK!!!

I purchased a copy of this picture when it was published a couple of years back. As I recall the serial numbers are late 1963 and the engines all have the euro heater. Look closely at the heat tubes going under the carbs. I mention this because the USA engines won't look exactly like these. I see Normal, Super and S-90 engines in this picture but I don't think I see any US engines.

Cheers!
