brake pads, tires, braking

#1 Post by Michael Eker »

There was a post re. how to improve the braking of a disk brake 356.

Some people said that the brake pads were the most important factor.

Others said that it was possible to lock up the wheels of a disk brake 356 using any brake

pads.

Would this not depend on the tires though?

For instance, a tire with poor grip would lock up easily, a tire with good grip would not.

A locked up tire has less braking effect than one that isn't locked, and which is still allowing

the brake disk and pads to convert energy to heat.

From http://www.tyretest.com/index.html

1: Top marks for tyre performance in this category.
6: Tyre performance is unacceptable in this category.

A Michelin XZX scored as below (overall average score Score 1.9)

Grip under dry conditions Score 2.00
Braking under dry conditions Score 2.00
Grip under wet conditions Score 3.00
Braking under wet conditions Score 3.00

A Kumho Powerstar Scored as below (overall average score 3.4)

Grip under dry conditions Score 2.67
Braking under dry conditions Score 2.67
Grip under wet conditions Score 3.67
Braking under wet conditions Score 3.83

It is a bit unfair to compare an expensive tire with a cheap one but you can see where I

am coming from.

It would be interesting to compare the stopping distance from 60MPH of the same car.

First fitted with low cost pads and Chinese or Korean tyres, and then fitted with Michelin or

Continental tires and high friction value pads, eg Pagid Orange RS 4-4, which are made in

356 size.
