Reverse polarity

#1 Post by John Lewenauer »

A friend accidently crossed the terminal connections on his battery, 64 356C. Several symptoms appeared as a result...

Clock does not function
Gas gauge reads full at all times
Temp gauge reads 1/3 warm at all times
Generator not producing current

With proper battery hook up:

Clock does not function
Gas gauge tests properly
Temp gauge went past full hot on removal of sending unit wire to test and did not return to cold
Generator not producing current

Questions:

Procedure to remove generator?
Any tricks to restore temp gauge function?

There are enough articles on clock repair, so that's covered.

Thanks.

John,
Test and flash the field of the generator first.
Drop the fan belt.
Ground DF to D- , and jumper from the B+ onthe regulator to D+ on the generator.
The generator will motor CW.

Now the field is flashed.
Try again to see if it generates.
See our web site for trouble shooting the gen/reg.

The oil temp needle is just stuck on full sclae.
Thump the glass to dislodge it.

Thanks Joe. We did flash and test the gen. It motored CW. Still no output. Drove the car 1 mile and evidently excited itself and has been perfect ever since.

Temp gauge needle not stuck, it fell off! We removed the gauge cluster and the temp gauge and reattached the needle. All's well now. So is the gas gauge. No harm done and thanks for your help.
