356C - Need help on trunk lid handle...

#1 Post by Jack Roberta »

can any explain how the Stoddard's rubber edging attaches to the bottom of the handle?
This piece came as a single strip - do you have to cut it apart to go around the screw studs and glue it to the handle. It looks like it doesnt go all the way down to the very front of the handle (where the badge is) is this right?

Thanks

Jack:

I just did this last week (using some of the profile material that Stoddards mistakenly provided me as "door top profile" rubber, this was the topic of another thread).

The profile should be cut to the length of the metal ridge that runs almost the length of the hood handle. The Katalog indicates the overall profile length is 450mm; I didn't measure mine. You'll have to cut slots for the 3 mounting studs protruding from this ridge. I cut the slots on the tight side and carefully press fit them over the studs. Once that was done I carefully cut the trailing edge of the profile to match the curve of the hood handle, then square cut the front edge.

As far as I know there is no profile for the curved leading edge of the C hood handles.

Have fun with the driver's side nut and washer!

Yes, it does not go all the way down and around the front. This is for water drainage so it doesn't pool under the handle and rust, I assume. As I recall, the strip stays intact and, if needed, you make access for the studs to go through. No glue, securing the handle holds the rubber in place. I'll have to look when I get home if no one else answers for sure.

Make sure that you also use new rubber seals at the 2 screws at the bottom of the handle where the crest is. These will keep water out from between the outer skin and the inner structure of the hood. It will eventually rust from inside if these seals are bad or missing.

Also, there are two rubber washers which go over the two front studs of the hood handle which space the front edge of the handle off the hood, protect the painted surface and seal out water which could go into the holes and collect and rust the front edge of the hood from the inside. The front edge of the hood handle should not touch the hood when installed properly.

That's what I couldn't remember, the rubber seal/spacer washers. Dual purpose, keep water out of the trunk and keep handle spaced from hood to drain water. I think they were grey?

There may have been some variation on this. Ken Ito informs me that they should be grey fiber washers however I have black rubber on my unrestored roadster and one other original handle, however it may be an early B vs. C thing. Maybe Jim Brazeale will jump in. He's probably fondled more of these things than anyone. Regardless, some type of spacer washer is there to prevent the front edge of the handle from touching the hood.

The leading edge gets two round buffers that goes over each stud. You may
be able to locate small grommets that will work. This will keep the leading
edge of the hood handle from pressing into the paint and creating a new area
for oxidation to rear its ugly head. As if 356s need another area to start
rusting.

Right or wrong, here's how mine is. Now that I think about it, I think I bought the grommets at a local ACE Hardware or pulled them out of my parts box. 'Scuse the dust!

"....Have fun with the driver's side nut and washer!"

I had some work done on the trunk lid years ago, and the guy who did the work lost that damn m4 nut into the frame. Every time the lid comes up, I get to listen to it roll all the way back to the rear.
But just looking at some 'fridge magnets; I could cut one into a strip and feed it into the hole. Maybe it'll grab the nut on the next trip to the front? Anybody try this?
Thanks,
Ron LaDow

What if you got a strong magnet and dragged it through the other side of the sheet metal to the front? Use the back of one of those magnetic parts trays perhaps?
