tire source urgently sought
Just got word that one of our local (356Burgh) guys needs a couple of new tires for his 356. The trouble is, Tire Rack .com STILL hasn't gotten re-stocked in the correct, 165x15 sizes (Kumho 758 Power Star). Anyone have a source for these tires, or another in the correct, 165x15 size (you don't want to get this old curmudgeon started about wider tires)?
My friend needs two tires by next weekend...........
Thanks for any useful information you can offer.

Bud, there have been several LENGTHY discussions about 165/15 tires
recently on the Forum. Try using the "Search" link at the top of
every page on the Forum. I found these:

Bud,
Nexen makes a tire very much like the Kumho in a 165/80 15".
The following source is a drag race shop that sells them as a skinny front for drag cars. I figure if they can handle a hot 1/4 mile, they can handle 356 duty.
Four can be purchased for $240 shipped from:
McCormack Racing 3563 Fort St. Lincoln Park, MI. 48146 1-800-999-3724
I live in Ann Arbor so I took a drive to check them out. They looked great and all had a 2007 or 2008 date code. I bought a set for my coupe.
Hope this helps,

Tires
I just bought some Michelin XZX from Coker Tire. Older style tred. 165SR15. They fit under the fenders well on my preA. 144.00 + ship.

Thanks, Barry. I plead insanity. I looked under "tech articles" (or
something like that) on the Registry website, and found only 6
items....none of which were pertinent. I didn't think to get on the
Forum page and look from there. I've forwarded your message (as well as
those from the others who've replied) on to my friend.
Thanks, again, to all.

An excellent choice. The Vredestein's look right and are very well made.
Plus, I would rather put on a tire made in Holland than Korea or China.
Just my 2 pfennings.

Hi Bud,
I agree that the Registry website tech section is not the place to
find information such as the current sources for a certain tire size.
That information changes too frequently.
I take it that you subscribe to the 356Talk Forum via email, so I
understand that it didn't occur to you to use the Forum "Search" link
in the web-based version. But that feature is just one of the many
features offered in the web-based Forum that make it so much more
useful than email.
Unlike the previous 356Talk email list, where if you wanted to search
old posts you had to go to the Registry website, log in to the
Members Only section (after finding the latest issue of the magazine
and looking up the password) and then navigate to the list archives
and fill in the search form, on the new Forum website the "Search"
link is on every page. It's one click and you're there!
On the new Forum, I subscribe via email to see new posts that come
in, but usually read/reply on the website. It's just easier to read
and then I see the photos nicely displayed in my browser. I also have
quick access to any private messages sent to me.
Best regards,
Barry Brisco

I just got an email reply from KumhoUSA, I'd asked when 165/15 was going to be available again. They said that they "have inventory coming into the country this month." So maybe in a few more weeks...
My Dunlops are perfect, the spare has never touched the ground (more's the pity); but they have a DOT date of "502." And since the stems are rotten and knowing they were on the car when I bought it 10 years ago, I'm going to replace them. Naturally, my local service shop here in Indianapolis (Autohaus Merkel) only has 3 in stock. Does anyone in the Indpls area have a new Kumho PowerStar 758 on hand? I'll also need a used tire for a spare, any brand will do, as long as it has some tread left and isn't as old as my Dunlops.

I spoke with a rep at Tire Rack about the reported Kumho shipment just yesterday. He confided that Kumho is sending the US more 165x15 Power Stars, and that they're Kumho's biggest US distributor. He claimed their allotment was 149 tires. That's it, 149 tires.
He also noted that Kumho's not real good about accuracy in regards to shipping. Says they've been told before that "Tires will be there eventually, maybe not a lot, maybe next month" and the next morning there's eight semi-trailers parked out front.
I finally put myself on the waiting list at Tire Rack, maybe I'll get a set in 2013. In the meantime it'll probably be off to Universal in a few weeks for a set of Vredesteins.
