#1 Post by Jon Wright »

Can powder coating withstand exhaust pipe/header temperatures? Trying to think what to coat the system on my "Outlaw".

No, to much heat.
They can be aluminized or ceramic coated, possibly other materials I am not familiar with.
Google 'Header Coating' for vendors, more info.

Powder Coating Heat Tolerance

Jon,
'Standard' powder coating probably not. I think it takes about
300 f to set the powder coating (depending on powder type)
But!!! There is a process called 'Jet Hot' This is designed for
exhaust systems. Google for more info.
Good to have seen you yesterday.:-)

I had my muffler, heat exchangers/J pipes coated with high temp powder coat. They are holding up to the heat.

I am currently restoring my 356 and have had lots of parts coated by:
http://www.calicocoatings.com/
Affiliation: Yes I am a friend - but a paying customer and no kick backs. But Calico is tops. They have coatings for anything you need hot or cold including powder. He has a spray and bake coating for exhaust or other hot parts.

The do make high temp powder paint that can be used on exhaust parts. But if you want real performance get it ceramic coated. They make ceramic coatings in all sorts of colors and there is a performance gain from the thermal barrier the coating provides.

I have used JetHot coating (ceramic) on motorcycle pipes. It's stays looking great. Heat is not a factor. I had the pipes on my 1970 BMW R75 coated....very happy.
