Identifying my transmission

#1 Post by Rafik Dous »

After hours and hours of cleaning, wire brushing, degreasing & polishing I can finally read all the numbers on my D transmission
On the front of the nose, there is the number 644 20114
On the bottom towards the front, there is 79 716/0 and another number towards the middle 29275
From reading the available material, the 29275 is the serial number. The 79 is the month and year so if I am reading it correctly, it was built July 1959. Which matchs my D's delivery date closely (Aug 1959). Am I correct?
Thanks
Rafik

Identifying my transmission

Yes, you are!

356 B T5 4.12.1959 – transmission 37/59 (week/year) – 33601 (serial – original delivered to my car) – 741/0 (type of transmission) but I found also 11.9 in front of 741/0 on it but do not know what it means?!

Hello Rafik,

See the trans photos at the bottom of this page http://www.356registry.org/Tech/engine- ... tions.html, they confirm that the "79" you see is indeed the assembly date of your trans, which makes sense given that you say your D was built in July 1959 (I understand you have the COA and that is what it shows). And 29275 is the trans serial number, that is in a similar range to other D's built at that time. See the Convertible D Registry page at http://convertibledregistry.com/registr ... 86830.html

Rafik's car is shown on that page at the D Registry, it's chassis number 86785. I reveal this only because he has had his car listed for sale on TheSamba.com for several months and his ad there shows the chassis number, so it's no secret. Photos of his car are shown on both websites for those who want to see its condition. Here is the link to TheSamba ad:

Barry and others,
I have tranny 59 716/0 which as you implied was assembled in May 1959, but the side halves are stamped 7/59. This would indicate a manufactured date after the assembly???? I believed the tranny to be unmolested.

Correction to my post-should be assembled 5th week of 1959, but case date stamps are 7/59.

Hi Alan,

Well, all those stamps were put there by humans, and as your own Forum "sig" implies, humans make mistakes. ;-)

Usually in error, usually confused...

This is what I know:

The transmission case has cast numbers on it, not stamped in numbers; one cast number is the part no. and the other is the casting date by week and year. So 7/59 is the 7th week in 1959.

The assembly date or completion date, the type number, the gear ratio and the trans serial number is stamped into the metal on the flat surfaces that face the pavement when mounted in a 356. That stamped date indicates the month and year. So 5/59 is May, 1959.

When the factory started stamping the type and gear ratios on a 716 (and later the 741) they began using numbers to signify the gear ratios instead of the ratio letters.
So, 716/0 = BBBC, 716/1 = BBAA, 716/2 = BBAB, etc. For all the different gear ratios and their cooresponding numbers, you can look in the Porsche Spec book.

See my photos on my Convertible D Registry website here:
http://www.convertibledregistry.com/fac ... tions.html

or on the 356 Registry website here:
http://www.356registry.org/Tech/engine- ... tions.html

Hope this helps,
John
