Re: License Plate Frame Madness

#46 Post by Bob Murray »

I recently purchased a 1970 914-6. The glove box 914-6 manual came in a blue plastic pouch labeled Volkswagen Santa Monica Inc.
2440 Santa Monica Blvd. I did a little research and found that the dealership is still at the same location. I called them and tried to find out if they had sold Porsche's in 1970. The two folks I talked to were not helpful at all. Does anyone here know if this dealership sold 914's during this period. Does anyone know someone that worked/works at this dealership?
I guess it is possible that someone put the manual in the wrong binder.
If this dealership did sell this car I would love to find a frame. Anyone ever see a Santa Monica VW License plate frame?
Any help/ideas/suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Bob

. . . 'cause, according to the Porsche Dealer Listing dated Apr '69, Ralph Cutright Co was the Porsche agent --- + at that same 2440 address . . . while the '70 listing shows a Ralph Cutright Porsche Audi at 1932 Wilshire . . . coupla blocks away

Sounds like your car may've been sold right when the dealerships were splitting-up. Late '69 was right when Porsche re-organized their NA operations and teamed-up w/ Audi

Cutright was at that location a LOOOOOOng time, too

Interesting to find out that Pape sold Porsches and VWs.
I remember them as the Pape brothers dealing in heavy
equipment and they/he are still in business in Eugene.
Next time visiting home I'll check with them for more history.

Perhaps of ancillary interest:-
It was the address of former VW/Porsche dealer Ralph Cutright, per the accompanying receipt copy with Porsche logo.
When living in Manhattan Beach and working in Santa Monica, I would purchase misc "stuff" for my 65C cab both at Vasek Polak's and Ralph Cutright's.
At the time, dealer lic plate frames were considered tacky dealer advertisements - analogous to a Buick dealership's frame - and were not befitting our classic Porsches and therefore discarded.

Gary,
Don Burns was in Garden Grove, California. This is pictured on my 1961 above which I purchased from them in 1970.
Originally, I had a VW frame from them, then I had exactly what you have which I picked up later in 1971.
When I sold my car, I let the frames go with it. Would you like to sell or trade your frame? I would love to have one back again since I repurchased my car 40 years later, but without those frames.

Hi Steve
I purchased a 356 from Masterson Porsche in Ventura in the 60's and a car from the Santa Barbara Porsche dealer (VanWyck?)
I would trade the Don Burns for one of those frames, as long as they have the Porsche logo.

Note the 'ribbing' on the sides; seems to appear mostly on the older frames --- pre-'60s?
