License Plate Frame Madness
I have a customer/friend that recently purchased a very nice 64 356C Cabriolet. In his research, he found out the it was first sold at Brumos Porsche in Florida. He started searching for Brumos Porsche license plate frames in the classifieds and on EBAY. Shocked by the prices asked for a stupid license plate frame, he picked up the phone and simply called Brumos, gave them his credit card, and is a short period of time a beautiful, brand new, metal BRUMOS license plate frame arrived. Total cost.............$15.00! I don't want to hear about plate frames from closed dealerships, I'm just pointing out what a little thinking, outside the box, can produce. $385.00 for a pitted license plate frame from the 70s? You've got to be kidding!

You are so right. Like many here, including you, I have held in my hand many old dealer plate frames, and yes, the original ones are always worn and pitted.
That said, has anyone else ever wondered why all of the Vasek Polak plate frames selling for many hundreds of dollars are mint, mint, mint????????? Are we to believe that they were all somehow so well cared for that they survived so perfectly? Or did someone open a closet somewhere and find hundreds of the Manhatten Beach location plate frames and then put them on the market?
Please correct me if I am wrong (which often happens here, I get my lunch handed to me regularly!!) but when it comes to VP frames, I smell a................................................ REPRO!!!

I have a very good friend who is General Manager of a big Toyota dealership. I mentioned to him that my Roadster came from Competition Motors and I would like a license frame from there.
He told me that for a minimum run of 100, I can have anything made in any material. The lettering is standard and so is the frame sizes.
So, it's buyers beware.

You could just contact this guy for a $30 repop Competition Motors Frame. Not sure how accurate it is though.

License Plate Frame Madness
That's nice Glenn,
The only thing is that there is no Porsche logo on it! The vw ones are much
easier to find;
And usually sell for a fraction of the original Porsche logo ones. It's
still nice - but a different deal...
Steve.

Hi Tony, tony apcar wrote:All Vasek Polak frames i have are date stamped on the back..repros...i dont know.nooo.
I am interested in what condition they are in. I just think it is quite curious that every VP frame I see for sale on eBay is MINT. Yet all other vintage dealer frames are worn, pitted, scratched, bent--you name it. I have several dealer frames, and none as nice as the VP's I see for sale on a continuos basis.
I just think that is too much of a coincidence.
As others also believe, there is certainly nothing wrong with reproduction anything (If done well) but I have never seen any VP frame seller call it anything other than "original", "new", or worse yet, "NOS".
The enterprising reproducer, I am sure, can have a date stamp put on any frame for a few pennies extra. Not trying to be a wet blanket, but I have always wondered if anyone else has noticed this?

True, I was just trying to point out that some dealerships are still in business and their frames are readily available at a reasonable cost.steve brown wrote:That's nice Glenn,

I'd be very interested and would pay good money to find an old "Deet Eichel" "Modesto" frame with the Porsche Logo on it. I heard there are some, but only have seen the ones with the VW logo. Deet Eichel is listed as a Porsche dealer in the dealership repair manual provided by the factory.
