Adjusting Euro Heater Valves

I've been trying to adjust the euro heater valves on my 64C for months. No matter what I do, I still get a small amount of air through the "slider" floor vents. It tends to warm up when I'm sitting idling (say at a stop light) and cools down when I am moving.

Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong? Is a small amount of air as good as I am going to get?

There really isn't much to adjust with the European Heater System. You might want to inspect the insides of the heater valves and make sure the butterflys are seating against the housing preventing any air from going into the cockpit. When the valves are closed, going into the car, vents open at the same time to exhaust all the hot air from the heater boxes twards the ground from the heater valves. The heat exchangers provide heat all the time. The heater valves, attached to the car just route the heat to the cockpit or to the ground under the car. If the seals on the butterflies in the heater valves are worn, there is no way to prevent heat from entering the car. You could always just remove the flex hoses that connect the heater boxes to the heater valves. That will stop any heat from entering the car. Put them back on in the fall when you need heat. I know, that doesn't fix the problem but does keep the cockpit cooler in the summer.

Your pictures are great, your method of adjusting the heater system is informative, unfortunately, it has nothing to do with Steve's European System. Steve's "Improved" heater system is quite different than the heater system most of us are used to seeing in the USA. Steve's system is very similar in design and function to that of a 911.

Jim, do you ( or maybe others ) know more about these seals ?
In the Porsche-Bulletin # F 23/63 at 3.Dec.1963 (for Germany and Sweden)
was mentioned, in case of clatter or/and an odor nuisance to install
certain seals from a firm HEINZ, Neu-Ulm, unfortunately not existing now.
See the pic with a copy of a box and detail of seal.
There were two sets of early heater boxes, the first set had one big hole
(I've them installed in my car) and the next set had louvers instead.
( see the pics below of my spare ones).

Anybody out there with an idea which material to use for seals now ??

The first thing to try is to disconnect the pull wire and then see if
the valves seal. There should be a closing spring on both types of
valves. The inside flapper had a white plastic rimming the flapper to
form the seal take a look inside and see if it still good.
