Starter Flywheel Help

#1 Post by Marc Graner »

Hello All,

I have recently aquired a 912 engine, with the original flywheel (130 teeth).
When the engine will be renewed I know I need to change the flywheel to fit
into my 356 C, but the first goal is to get it running / tested as it is.

To start the engine / to mount a starter I have a old bug gearbox which I will
cut into pieces. The question now, is what starter can I use? Bug 12V with how
many teeth? Bug 6V with 9 teeth seems to be not suitable (I have an old one).

Maybe somebody can help - Thanks in Advantage

The 12V bug starter will work. Make sure that you have cut away enough of the bug trans case to clear the flywheel.

Hey Jim,

thanks for your fast answer. Do you know how many
teeth a 12V starter should have? Could it be that 12V
starters have also 9 teeth?

Bbest wishes - Marc

12V starters have 9 teeth also. They are smaller, though.

Both of the starter motor gears are not standard.
Each has been produced by what is know as profile shifting.

Sure would like to know the module of the 912 gear.

I don't think the 912 will go into the bug tranny because of the 912's
larger flywheel.

12V on a 6V ring gear

#7 Post by Gene Choin »

I run 12V with a 6V ring gear.
I use the 311VW starter. T
he VW automatic was 12V, but still used the smaller ring gear.
