Engine numbers

#1 Post by Ken Daugherty »

I just finished an inventory of my 356 motors and have a list available. Some are complete core motors and some are just the third piece. There are 64 numbers available. Who is keeping the list of motor numbers so I can add these?
If you are looking for a particular pushrod 356 motor odds are that I dont have it, but will look anyway.
I do have some unnumbered blocks and 'third pieces'.

I would be interested in knowing if you have P-712778, the original engine for my 64C coupe.
Thanks.

Ken,
When you speak of unnumbered blocks, do you mean even the case halves have no identifiying numbers? I know there are unnumbered third pieces, but weren't aware of totally unnumbered blocks.

I don't s'pose you have anything close to 806447 (63 S-90 vintage)?

Ron,

Unnumbered (to me) means that the third piece does not have a engine serial number. The two main block halves are match numbered. I have learned that the 912 third pieces are not match numbered to the main block halves.

I must assume that they (Porsche) is very confident in their machining to 'assume' that it is not necessary to keep all three parts together.

I have swapped third pieces with the two main block halves but only to save the sn. There is a trick to it and I have never had a problem.

I also have milled off the 912 mount bosses to convert the third piece to be used on a 356 motor. Jusat did one for George Dunn...A bit of mill time and a rotary file and it looks fine.

Ron,
The only blocks (crankcases) I have seen without any serial
number or engine family numbers are replacement ones.

Ken,
You asked "Who is keeping the list of motor numbers so I can add these? "
The answer is simple, the 356 Registry. I assumed that every member knows that the Registry maintains the largest list of chassis, engines and transmissions. Log on to the Registry website and go to the VIN database and enter in your numbers.
