Temporary Spare - How does it handle?

#1 Post by Ken Wallace »

There has been a lot of discussion on tire age and the need to get rid of the
aged ones. My spare is way past maturity and I want to get a new one.
There was a recent suggestion here about using a T-135-70D15 as a spare.
Space consideration being one reason.
I measured the size of my 165-15 spare compared with the temporary from my MR2
which is the T-135-70D15 and the 165-15 is about 4 inches taller. Can anyone
Share their experience on how the car drives with this size tire installed?
I assume that the routine would be if you have a flat on the rear you would
swap a front to the rear and use the temporary on the front.

I use 165/80/15 tires all around and of course have an identical tire for a spare.

But if you use bigger tires and have a smaller spare, I would have guessed that in case of a flat you would want the front/steering tires to both match. This is a good question and I'm glad Ken brought it up. I look foward to hearing from those more expert than I on whether the smaller tire should be used at the rear or at the front.

Obviously any time you are driving with one tire that is a significant mismatch you want to drive very cautiously and get a matching size tire to replace the smaller one ASAP.

Temporary Spare - How does it handle?

All,
My suggestion is to put the smaller spare in front, so as to not
overstress the differential gears in the transmission. It will likely
pull toward the direction of the smaller tire, pull when stopping and
generally handle poorly, which will remind you to change the darned
thing ASAP.

> A significantly mis-matched tire should be treated as an "emergency spare" with the same precautions as come when they are used on newer cars. Keep the speed down, get the mismatched tire off as soon as possible, and do not expect good handling or braking.

> If you are really using the spare until you can get a right-sized tire on, then front or rear is not an issue. Still, front is probably better even though it might be worse for handling. Using a mismatched tire on the rear means that the differential is working overtime rather than being nearly static as it always should be in straight line driving. I would prefer not to put significant wear exposure on the differential and tackle the handling with how I drive.
