Tire age

#1 Post by Ken Daugherty »

Last evening on 20-20 they did about 12 minutes explaining tire aging and the consequences. They went to various retailers and noted that they were selling 'aged' tires.
A very good report and they even illustrated how to read the date codes.
Timely reporting that is of benefit to all.
It may be available for a second look on the 20-20 website. I haven't looked !

Tire age

#3 Post by Barry Brisco »

Bob, if your car is a trailer queen, fine. Otherwise you are taking
a real risk with your well-being, your car, and everyone else on the
road with you. You could easily have a sudden, catastrophic tread
separation, with disastrous results.

For everyone's safety, please either replace your tires with new
ones, or don't drive your car on public roads over 10 mph.

This is not a subject to joke about with smiley faces.

Bob, I just changed my 10 year old XZX's. They looked brand new aside from some very tiny cracks in a few spots on the sidewalls. When they were dismounting them they all split and started to fall apart. The mechanic said I was EXTREAMY lucky that I didn't have a catastrophic failure. DO NOT drive on those tires!!!!!

Ancient tires

See:

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story ... 605&page=1

Some years ago I had a tire suddenly deflate and come off the rim at 70 mph.

It was a brand new tire but badly fitted by the tire vendor.

It was a frightening experience and severely dented my driving confidence for quite a

while.

Saving money by keeping tires past six years is a false economy.

You can buy a new 165R15 tire for $41.

See "early import radials" at http://www.gearworksmfg.com/autotires/nankangtires.html

Since becoming educated about tire age, I was dealing with a leaking valve stem on my daily driver (BMW) and noticed the date on my just acquired tires (month old). They're already two years old!

I've been having traction issues with my Pirelli P6000s. When I told friend about it he asked how old they were and i told him 10 years. He explained that tires get old and hard over time. I then said they have no cracks and are stored in a garage out of the sun, but he said that doesn't make a difference.

Another friend told me to sell them on Craigslist since they have very little tread wear, but i'd never do that since it's could be a safety issue.

Two things never to "cheap out" on are brakes and tires.

I was just chatting with someone about this at my office where I keep my original rims. I mentioned I had those tires since i was 16 when they came with the car (that was 22 years ago!) Anyways these Pirrelli's look brand new still and have lots of tread - I wouldn't use them just never bothered to take them off.

The date code is 777 T0161.131 T1 - does this mean the 13th week in 1981? ( I got the car in 1986 so it has to be before that date).

I've attached a photo circa 1987 of me and the tires (man I was looking young) - and that was my g/f back in the day - wonder if she'll be at my highschool 20 year reniunion this year?

Thanks for the info everyone - i'm using XZX at the moment but will have to upgrade next year as they are about 8 years old now even though they look great still.

Don't do it. Don't even THINK of doing it. I too saw those heart-stopping pics of that D that got severely damaged because of old tire failure. IMO running any tires older than 4 or 5 years old on your car is borderline suicidal.

Heck, on a budget? Spend, what, $300 factoring in shipping and install (If that) and get the Nankangs. IMO, it's not even a matter of damaging your car, it's a matter of avoiding death.

I remember seeing a Mercedes-Benz ad in the Sunday NY times back in the 90s...

It read, if memory serves....

You wouldn't buy a cheap Parachute.
You wouldn't buy a cheap crash helmet
You wouldn't buy a cheap life preserver

Now let's talk about cars.

(insert image of MB lineup)

Mercedes-Benz
tagline..etc.

It stuck with me, wish I had saved and laminated that.
