Gaskets and Seals; Where do they go????

#1 Post by Richard Wisniewski »

To All,

For the first timer; is there a publication or standard for Engine rebuild, as to which Gasket or Seals goes where, which side is up, does some require lubrication and others do not, do you use a spray on sealer on some and not others?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Most of the manuals (factory or otherwise) will give you location and most are pretty intuitive anyhow. Sealants are like 'those things'; everyone has one and an opinion. Harry Pellow wrote several books and offered his opinions; others will have other opinions.

Gaskets and Seals; Where do they go????

Basic rule of thumb is to install all gaskets and seals dry other than
lube to help install the seals. There are a few exceptions due to the
age of the parts that might need some sealant but not many. As far as
the motor is concerned I install all dry and don't have any leak issues.
Like anything else it is the prep. work done to the sealing surfaces
that make it seal successfully.
