To me the big positive is imposing less stress on the case, lowering chances of a crack. In SoCal, the temps in the summer encourage one to have as much cooling as you can. Take your 356 south over the Grapevine when it's 100 degrees out and I think you'll see the point I'd emphasize. It's tough enough in triple digits regardless.

Jim, what engine oil temp do you see going over the grapevine? If it went over 250*F I would be changing it fairly soon after and if over 270*F would switch to synthetic before I did it again.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Believe me, David, after the first trip the oil got changed, and so did the route home. When you go to Monterey from L.A. over the Grapevine, you leave early in the morning so the temps are still (very) cool, but on the way back, if it's hot, the only way is a slightly longer 101 route, or change your oil when you get home.
