Does anyone know how much hp/torque a Volkswagen transaxle can take? The reason I am asking is obvious, I don't have my original gearbox, instead I have one from a Volkswagen. The serial number is A1101992. Any VW experts out there?

How much HP are you talking?
I have a built up IRS tranny (Berg 5 w/ ZF) and beat the snot out of it with 200+hp and can't see it breaking.
On the other hand I have a friend with a DRD built 2276 that has 210hp in a 65 with a stock swing tranny and has yet destroyed it. I'm sure he will be cause it has a rather weak 4.375 r/p and he drive like a maniac.

I assume that given the drag racing...they can be made to take whatever you cah bolt to them...and still get the front wheels up.

Uh, are you sure it's gonna be cheaper fitting a VW 'box to your car than finding a 356 unit? They don't 'bolt in'.

Uh, are you sure it's gonna be cheaper fitting a VW 'box to your car than finding a 356 unit? They don't 'bolt in'.

Didn't take the time to look up the # but it can take more than you can stuff into the engine compartment.
Now if you are doing 5000RPM drop starts on pavement you might break an axle or two.

I would guess that amount of time and money spent to get one in
there you might as just go with an OE one. The last swing axle VW box
was made to work on a 55 hp motor. Don't forget you will need to make
the clutch work and get the clutch cable to be happy and then there is
the issue of the rear tranny mounts. Go original, its better, and
probably less money and less head aches plus I don't know what ratios
are in there.
