Has anyone ever had their car used in movies ?

#1 Post by John Ward »

Just wondering if anyone has had their car used in movies, T.V. Commercials, Etc.
Did you register with a company that does this ?
Can you share....
What is the going rate per day ?
Do they pick-up and return your car
Insurance
Do you stay with the car
Experience...Good or Bad...would you recommend or not
Thanks

I used to have to rent cars for advertising photo shoots. Just some of the basics:

Your insurer will not likely cover the car in any way. The production person renting the car will supply insurance. Make sure this is discussed in detail and make sure it's in writing. But the coverage they provide will not likely be even remotely close to an agreed-value policy, meaning if there's need to file a claim you may be disappointed in the outcome.

Most of the time the models/actors/production crew, etc will not be car people. Their main concern is to get the shot they need. Do not assume they will treat the car as you would. Not saying they will be intentionally careless, but their thought will be focused on their job, not your car.

All I can say is that having dealt with this from the other side--even though I personally was extremely cautious and respectful of the cars I rented--I would never even consider renting my car. It's not that I know of more than a couple instances where there were problems, it's just that as a car guy, I don't think it's worth the chance unless you're planning on this being your business, not just a way to make a few extra dollars.

I had a couple of cars which were 'auditioned' for use in ads. After speaking with my insurance agent, I made this offer:
'The renter deposits 100% of the agreed purchase price in my account. If the car is returned minus any harm at all, I will refund 100% of that amount, minus the agreed rental fee. Estimated costs to repair any damage at all will be further withheld until the damage is repaired to my satisfaction'.
No body took the offer. You wan't do deal with their insurance over any damage? Good luck.

I know John got a free set of tires after one of the actors locked up the brakes and flat spotted them.

Some years ago, a friend used an outfit in New York called, "Picture Cars". He rented his cabriolet for use in the Tom Selleck film, 'Her Alibi'. The car was away for 14 weeks and he was paid $14,000. Not too shabby since that is about what he had paid for it. Shortly after being returned, the' hockey stick', in the transmission broke...possibly a coincidence but maybe because someone was jamming the shifts. Only other problem was a series of scratches on one side, where camera apparatus had been attached.

Leave it to Adam! 100% correct. I believe the car was only shown for about twenty seconds.

Movie and TV props only need to look good enough on film/video to convince an audience, and they get treated that way. The damage inflicted would be repaired the same way they would fix any other rental.

My '61 Roadster was used in a Victoria Secret ad some years back. Pete Bartelli set it up, and kept an eye on the car during the shoot. I would never give one of my cars to a movie studio. My wife is in the business, and that is her advice. ……………..Jim.

So Pete kept an eye on the car, or the models?

Back in the magazine days we were doing a shoot at the office and one of the photo people wandered out into the garage area, next thing you know I had a model upside down in my 356. Those were fun days.

On this side of the Pond Gavin had his nice green 912 used in Spy Game (the car Robert Redford drove). I think they scratched the bonnet and paid for a good respray.

When my dad owned my Roadster he "loaned" it out for a straight-to-video soft porn movie if that counts. One of the so-called producers was the son of a friend of his so they took real good care of it. This was back in the early '90's.
